I hope you had a great winter.
They have been the best years of my life! At the end of my last tour I decided to take a little time off and get back to my simple island life for a much needed re-charge. It's been an incredible winter of playing shows, filming music videos, writing a few tunes, surfing, and building my own recording studio.
When I returned to the island after my last tour I took a day trip to Luperon Bay, which is considered to be the safest harbor in the Caribbean during hurricane season. Just minutes away from where Christopher Columbus landed the Santa Maria on his maiden voyage to the New World, hundreds of sailboats head there to wait out stormy seas. The beauty here is unimaginable!
I went there to find a sailboat to charter and that day I met an incredible family: Adam, Jessica, and their 6-year-old daughter, Tallulah. They had been cruising the Caribbean, Central America, and Polynesia for seven years, home schooling their daughter along the way. They had sailed into Luperon to wait out the hurricane season and make some repairs to their 40ft Hans Christian named "Callisto".
In Greek mythology, Callisto was a mistress of Zeus. She gets turned into a bear by his jealous wife and is later made into the constellation Ursa Major, or the Big Dipper. The boat is heavy and powerful like a bear and you feel very safe and protected when on board. Captain Adam uses the stars to sail by and I think the name fits perfectly; she is a beauty of a boat. I saw her from land before I ever met the Captain and I said to myself "that is the boat I want for this music video". I spoke with Adam about the video concept and we arranged a day to take Callisto out to sea and film "Boy Overboard".
I'm excited to release the official video, I hope you like it.
"Boy Overboard" was written with my longtime co-writers: Ben and Alfred. It's one of my favorites off my last album "Islands". I've spent most of my life on the ocean, having grown up on the Pacific Coast and now living on the Atlantic. The ocean gives me strength and peace and when I'm alone out on the sea all the worries and stress of life just disappear. This is a song about falling overboard in love, a song about searching the sea for your soul mate, a song that brings together the power of love with the power of the ocean. Music and the ocean have been in my life as long as I can remember. I think that’s why this song resonates with me so much.
